There is a sweet component to the smell, and that carries over to the smoke. Flavors of cherry, rose and a deep nuttiness are exhaled with increasing pleasure. A first light is brings billows of rich white smoke, followed with a brief visit of the tamper and then a tamping light. Bracken Flake has to be one of the slowest burning blends I've piped, it seems endless! Add to that some mid-bowl tang and spiciness. SKU: LIMIT 2 PER CUSTOMER. As for the tonquin present in and strength of this blend, Bracken Flake is more companionable than 1792 Flake, but BF is still quite full and best on a full stomach. There is no way this is likely to bite but its no shrinking violet either. One of the reasons for this is that I find Bracken Flake's flavor profile so elusive that I keep being drawn to it to try to plumb its depths. What a shame it is that this wonderful flake is discontinued! but it sure has a strong room note. I think its also related to Kendal Cream flake, and that they share the same topping. I loved it! One star for quality, second for the reminder to smoke slow, but this is one SG I won't be buying again, SG do too many other tobacco's which IMO are far superior. BF burns down to a fuffy white ash and leaves no dottle to speak of. A strong tobacco all around. As a matter of fact I'm sure that's the case. I dried it out and it's still not 3 stars but its getting better. A lucious flavor. I have to relite several times in the course of a bowl, but that is no big deal, as the smoke is very pleasant and sweet. Tonquin and carrots are the tastes I get off this very fine flake. I mostly taste the rum. Deep Dark flakes to match the flavors. When I do taste the tobaccos theyre delicious, dark, earthy, spicy Kentucky with a slightly sweet cigar note coming from the air cured. DaniDom Shaving Brush Review | DaniDom History | An interview with DaniDom, A Band of (Briar-)Brothers - a short story. I bought a tin of this blend, not knowing what I had signed up for. If 1792 is too much but you still kinda like dark flakes, try this one. The first thing I noticed upon cracking the tin is the beautiful dark brown flakes lined neatly in double-rowed stacks. However, upon lighting there was no potpourri note, no Lakeland floral/soapy note, nor any tonquin note. This is definitely a close relative of 1792, but far less assertive. This is a review I never thought I'd write. Try it in a clean quality pipe and toke gently. Aroma: Strong and pungent, almost cigarish in aroma. Best after lunch or dinner. Sun: 12pm-6pm This bowl was much better than the first. 14 16 16 comments Best Add a Comment utahestatesales 5 yr. ago It's like 1792 minus the strong tonquin topping, then infused with this essence of earth. While the aroma of this flake may be intimidating, the flavor, smoked slowly, is amazing. The flavour is glorious, at first I get the aromatics and a mild tobacco taste, with a moderate sweetness. It comes quite moist & needs to be dried out for a while. I almost get the same sensation on the back of my throat with BF as I get when enjoying pure maple syrup though I would not suggest that this tastes like nor smells like maple. After a week or so it has dried just a bit and is fine. This is REAL tobacco!! Taste: The scent of of the tobacco is that of an autumn forest; wet earth and moss, decaying leaves and a pine-like odour from the topping. The flakes are a little moist. Little dottle and the majority burns to a nice grey ash. Otherwise, I like this more than 1792 (which I have not had for years). Taste is full. Samuel Gawith 1792 Dark Flake Pipe Tobacco 250g Box. After a few sniffs i could smell the dark virginia's coming through pretty nicely. That is not far off. I found that drying it under a bright light for 15-45 minutes or so until it's a little stiff (but not brittle) brought it to life. An idea came up to mix these two to get a balanced taste and more complexity, it works well, and more interesting when change the portion of Bracken. I tried it and shelved it then because the topping just didnt meld with the tobacco taste for me. It doesn't make my regular rotation due to its mono-dimensionality but it's a good smoke and one that should be tried by the smoker that is put off by 1792 but likes the richness. The pouch aroma is very rich, peaty and much like 1792. A few Reviewers have compared this to 1792 flake or Dark Flake. It's not sweet (at least not overtly), it's not bitter (at least not overtly), it's not musty, nor like decaying flowers (at least not overtly), it's just dark, like some exquisite subtle liquour the essence of terra. Kendall Cream Flake. Less tonka and a more subtle blend in the topping, the tobacco is a little less potent and it's a little less sweet. There is a hint of floral from time to time, but the defining taste is tobacco, and I found the topping to be fairly mild. I cannot put my finger on this one. Rubs very easy, lites up easy and produces lots of smoke. Probably because the SG Kentucky and Dark Fired burleys are so overpowering on their own. Hopefully their tinning issues have gotten worked out and they will get their production back to normal soon. I don't get it. I would not recommend it to those (like me) who enjoy heavy Latakia blends like Pirate Kake. I see the similarities in strength (Dark Flake) and flavor (1792) but neither is really accurate. Under this I can smell leathery, earthy tobacco, with a bitter chocolate aroma. Bracken Flake contains no noticeable tonquin. Again, really smokes similar to a perique blend. This isn't much like Cob Plug, with that almost cloying aroma of tonquin, but more of a polite introduction to it. And the long and rich history is somehow perfectly reflected in their sublime tobacco blends; theres simply something remarkably old fashioned about them! Mint? Probably over-the-top for a lot of people. I don't know, this just wasn't for me. Real faint but this could be due to the age of the tobacco. The tin aroma is muddy and unpleasant but the smoke is rich, full and satisfying. Opening the tin, I was surprised. That being said, if you like 1792, you should try this too. I was surprised to find very little taste reminiscent of the smell, the taste was, to me, pure tobacco. Samuel Gawith Samuel Gawith Pipe Tobacco There is not a pipe tobacco company currently, or past, that epitomizes the word tradition more so than Samuel Gawith, with its recipes dating back to almost a decade before 1800. It is powerful, in every meaning of the word - strong in nicotine and flavour. There's just something about this flake though. It's strong, yes and not for the faint of heart. For me, this was very similar to St Bruno Flake -- no, not the same, but similar. As a traditional blend type this is an excellent choice that any Enthusiast should try. What hit me was not the spicyness of the flavour but how sigularly peppery it is which appealed to me. The fired leaf is more apparent, and a bitter chocolate taste appears at times. It packed much easier and lit easily as well. This was one of my first entries into the SG Flake arena. But none of these manages to be overpowering. I love it. Everyone else should bum a bowl from a friend before buying. Samuel Gawith Black XX Finest Kendal Twist, Samuel Gawith Brown No. I is very full bodied and strong, yet it does not give any tongue bite at all, and does not produce a lot of smoke. The kinship with 1792 is undeniable, but thankfully, without the large dose of Tonquin. BF burns slowly, even when bone dry, and there is no tongue burn. SOLD OUT !!! The first bowl smoked pretty dry, though a little steamy, the airing out helps tremendously with this one. Was very surprised how much I liked this. The only things I'd add are, first, that the tin aroma is definitely "intimidating," as the blurb puts it. But certainly SG's dark entries are winners too, in the # 1 and 2 categories IMO. I almost ruined my pipe! Summary:. Strength is medium, and some of the fruit pouch note comes through in the smoke.
